Table for Two
Enjoying Time with God

For many of us, having consistent time alone with God is a big goal but is hard to achieve at times...right? I know it is for me sometimes. We find ourselves racing through life – busy with school, work, our families, volunteering, and sports – while our spiritual life is at the bottom

of our to-do lists. We need to figure out how to walk closer with God so that our time alone with Him doesn’t turn into a ritual or a chore. How do we do that?

First, let’s look at God’s Word and see what it has to say about us spending time with Him. (Isn’t it funny how we have everything laid out right in our Bibles, but we tend to not look there, because it takes time?!) God invites us to spend time with Him every day! In Matthew 11:28, He simply says, “Come to me.” This is an open invitation any time you are ready to be available for Him! You can come as you are; there’s no need for church clothes or a set appointment. You can meet Him in your room, still in your jammies. Isn’t that awesome?

Now, let’s look at how we can meet God wherever we are at….

Just for today.
All you can focus on is today. Don’t make promises about tomorrow that you cannot keep. Tomorrow’s faithfulness will work itself out, so just focus on today’s time with God.

Set the mood.
Make sure that you meet with God in a quiet place. Maybe find a place that you can return to every time you meet with God.

What to bring.
You don’t need your whole study library! All you need is your Bible, a pen, and a writing journal, where you can write down your prayers. This way, you can look back and thank God for all the prayers He has answered! (Just remember to thank Him even if He answers the prayer with a different answer than what you were looking for!)

Accountability.
Have accountability to yourself. If you miss a day (or two or three), don’t quit meeting God altogether. You can’t allow yourself to get stuck in feelings of guilt. Even though you recognize you haven’t spent time with God, you have a chance to make it up to Him and yourself by getting back on track.

So, let’s get alone with God and start enjoying our time with Him! Always know that no matter what season you are at within your life, God honors the time you spend with Him, regardless of its length!

Sparkle is the girl’s ministry of Shine Ministries, at Word of Life Christian Center, led by Teri Bagwell. Our mission is to provide leadership, knowledge, guidance, and growth to young ladies, ages 13-18, by teaching the Word of God and training teenage girls to apply Godly principles in their everyday lives. We aim to provide a positive, encouraging atmosphere for young ladies to grow spiritually and build healthy God-centered relationships. Our goal is to empower young ladies to recognize proper boundaries and expectations on how true women of God live their lives.

Teri Bagwell is the Director of the teenage girls ministry Sparkle at Word of Life and also heads up the Pulse youth ministry with her husband, Pastor Aaron Bagwell. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Colorado. In her free time, Teri enjoys studying fashion, as well as creating and designing clothes.
